Remember all the hype before the Segway came out? Dean Kamen’s two-wheeled invention was touted as revolutionary prior to its launch, leaving the Internet abuzz with speculation about the nature of the supposedly society-changing device. Once revealed, however, reaction to the Segway could best be described as “Really? That’s it?”

I get the same vibe from Google’s Glass Project. When Google Glasses launch, they’re supposed to change how we interact with online information. Many analysts speculate they’ll change the SEO landscape forever. And they might, if anyone uses them.
Essential Item or Expensive Toy?
Since the price tag for a pair of Google Glasses comes in at a hefty $1,500, mass adoption immediately after launch is unlikely. Perhaps Google hopes the Glasses will be the next Must Have technology. If they generate the same excitement as new Apple products do, the glasses could be a game-changer. At that price, however, it’s debatable as how many people will have access to the new tech.
How Google Glasses Could Change SEO
Google’s hope, presumably, is for their glasses to become the next step in the mobile device evolution. In just the last few years, we’ve watched laptops give way to smartphones and tablets. So in order to succeed, Google Glasses will have to compete with established mobile devices.
Let’s imagine, for a moment, a world where smart glasses replace mobile devices. Suddenly, whether you’re the best SEO company NY has to offer or a one-person business creating a social media presence, you have to work with glasses in mind. What changes would be necessary?
Shorter, Faster Information
We’re already seeing local SEO take prominence as more people perform mobile searches. We’ve also seen the need to accommodate small smartphone screens with mobile-friendly website design.
Now imagine someone viewing your website not through a smartphone, but through a pair of eyeglasses. Only a portion of the eyeglass area will display information, as Google understands people still need to see where they’re going. Besides, imagine the distracted walking lawsuits that could develop!
The amount of real estate you’ll have to get your message across is going to be extremely limited, so you’ll have to make the maximum use of screen space. And because Google Glass users are likely to be on the move, they’re going to want that information instantly and in easily digestible chunks.
Local SEO
Google claims users will be able to simply look at a business, restaurant or building and access information about the site. For example, glancing at a movie theater would provide users with movie listings, reviews and the menu at the concession stand. At the same time, the user could download a discount code for tickets or buy tickets in advance. This capability would make local SEO and geotagging essential in a world dominated by Google Glasses.
Google may be quietly pushing for increased Google+ adoption alongside Google Glasses. Reports have stated that the eyewear will pull the bulk of business information from Google+. As a result, Google’s social media wallflower may be about to become the belle of the ball.
